Meeting with Ms Cullen-11/12/09

Today we were supposed to be interviewing Ms Cullen for our documentary. We were expecting to get the interview because we had been delayed for several weeks. When the week finally came around, we was excited to have the chance to interview her and get her opinions on how she has enforced certain rules in order for our students to stay healthy and in shape. As a group, we then went to her PA to confirm that the meeting was in place. While we waited for the principal to finish her prior meeting we were then told to come back after 5 minutes. This then continued for another 40 minutes until the PA finally said that we were now unable to have a interview with her. This would have been a good addition to the documentary because we would have had the opinions of a principal and see what polices she had put in place for the benefit of the school. So now we shall find an alternative view of a professional's view on obesity

When we go out to Interview people either on the streets or in a School we will be asking them all the same questions.

Questions to be asked when Interviewing:

  1. What are your views on Obesity?

1a. If the interviewee gives a one worded answer (good, bad, ect.) then ask ‘Why?’

  1. Is there anyone that you know who is Obese?

2a. If they answer with ‘Yes’ and no explanation, then ask ‘How has it effected them?’

  1. Who do you think is to blame for young people’s Obesity? The Parents? The Media? Or the people themselves?

3a. If they merely pick one of the three (or more) without an explanation then ask ‘Why do you think that?’

  1. Is there anything you do to combat obesity? For example, are you on any diets or do you regulary work out?

4a. If they say that they are on a diet with no explanation ask, ‘What diet are you currently on?’ after answer: Follow up with ‘Do you think that this has made a big impact on your life?’

4b. If they say that they work out on a regular basis, ask ‘How often do you work out?’ after answer: Follow up with ‘Do you think that this has made a big impact on your life?’

Filming in Enfield Town-10/12/09

Today we went to record footage in Enfield Town. What we did was interview the general public and ask them their opinions on what their views are on obesity and who they thought was to blame for this. While interviewing the general public, we asked them two questions; What there views were on obesity and who they thought was to blame for this. We interviewed about twelve or more people. While interviewing the public, we noticed that some of the answers that were given were very different.

Filming, Interviewing Teachers-03/12/09

Today, we began the intervewing process and interviewed certain teachers within the school. In total, we interviewed three teachers in total. While recording our footage, we captured a range of different views and opinions from the teachers. This did not arise when asked whether they had any friends or family members effected by obesity, one teacher's response was that she did not personally know of anybody but she did however "see people" on the streets that were overweight. When the other teachers were asked whether they had any family members or friends that were effected by the problem, their opinions swayed towards the schemes that are in place within school for children to lose weight. This was a positive aspect that was captured but then when asked what their views were on obesity, that's when the views started to differ. One teacher response was less descriptive. She only stated that obesity was not good for the heart. So when you review the footage, you can see that the description is very basic. But when you hear the other teacher's views, you can hear a different tone of answer. Their answer was very egotistical. They went on to say that it is "unnecessary".

Progress- 03/12/09

For our opening we have a montage of clips showing people exercising, eating and fast food restaurants; we aim to create factors such as humour and we also try to create an awareness of obesity and lifestyles within the U.K .We have also shot many interviews with school students and the school teachers in Lea Valley High.

We have created a list of questions that we are going ask the interviewees.

Questions to be asked when Interviewing:

questionnaire for target audience

To get information on our target audience we created a questionnaire so we would have a good understanding of who would be most effected by our Documentary. For example, using the questionnaire we found that XX% of people think that The Parents are to blame for young people's obesity. This is the questionnaire that we used:

Supersize Me

Morgan Spurlock has decided to show their audience the effects of what happens to the human body (when they are in perfect health), when they eat an unhealthy proportion of fast food. Then surprisingly, we find out that eating McDonalds day & night is apparently bad for you. We plan to give a similar effect to our audience by showing the end result, of what Spurlock showed his audience in Supersize Me. However, in our documentary we are going to take it one step further there by showing the effects of obesity and showing comparisons with people’s views on both obesity & views on how to stay healthy.

The humour effects used in Supersize Me is the use of satire, for example, the advertisement poster, where he has got an outrageous amount of chips in his mouth at once with the look of shock on his face, with a caption underneath saying “A Film of Epic Portions”. The fact that he has put all of these chips in his mouth and then looks shocked about it brings in a Ironic humour to his documentary.

In the first 58 seconds of our documentary we will be putting in disgusting images of people eating fast food combined with a parody song of the Michael Jackson ‘Beat It’, called: ‘Eat it’ by Weird Al. We have achieved a ironic humour out of a very serious situation by combining these two elements.

Spurlock had various interviews with Nutritionists, Doctors, Nurses & others in a medical profession. In our documentary, we unfortunately could not get interviews with the various people that Spurlock got interviews with. However, we managed to get the views of the Public, teachers from a Sports College and a Fitness Instructor. Also, by interviewing people who do not have a professional background into the subject we have given it an open & less bias take on the Documentary by showing that anyone’s view can be valid.

Obesity in the U.K

What is your USP?

Our documentary is about obesity. Our aim is to find out how and why so many young people in the UK are becoming obese. This subject concerns many people as the general public are concerned about their image and they are aware that obesity is a pandemic. Our documentaries' subject may have been touched upon in previous documentaries but we are looking to make it as unique as possible by interviewing not only the victims of the issue but also the individuals who are trying to help ease the situation.

What type of documentary is it?

Our documentary will aim to use a mix of the different modes within documentary.
One of the types will shall aim to use is expository mode. We will use this mode by adding commentary into our footage. This will act as the voice of god throughout the documentary. We shall also be using the performative mode. This is because we will aim to interact with the participants by asking them question about the situation so that we can hear their views and opinions on the matter.

What documentary inspired you?

The documentaries that inspired us are the documentaries 'Super-size me' by Morgan Spurlock and 'Who Made Me Fat' by Becca Wilcox. These documentaries inspired because they too touched upon the situation of obesity. Both these documentaries where aired the the U.K, 'Super-size me' was broadcasted on Channel 4 and 'Who Made Me Fat' was broadcasted on BBC Three. The channel BBC Three and Channel 4 are both known for the controversial subjects they touch upon on their documentaries so we are trying to attain the same but also to educate are audiences.

Is it viable

The documentary is highly feasible, this is because we are able to access different items which will help us create our documentary. For example, access to a sports based secondary school (Lea Valley High School), fitness instructors, sufferers of obesity and the general public.

What locations will you use?

We intend to use a wide range of different locations in our documentary. Such locations that will be used are high streets, gyms, fast-food restaurants and a school. High streets such as Enfield Town would be used for interaction with the public. Fast-food restaurants will be used to show the reality of how easy it is to purchase fast-foods. The school has been chosen due to healthier food scheme which has been put in place. The school also has successful football, basketball and netball teams which may be an element we use within our documentary.

Who have you approached for interviews?

We have asked the Headteacher of Lea Valley High School, Ms J Cullen, to take part in an interview and we also have Me Bennett who is a personal fitness instructor, nutrition's advisor and expert karate trainer. As well as using these individuals, we will also be the general public and asking for their opinions.

What further research will be required in order to be well informed?

To make sure that we have sufficient research, we shall be looking into the facts of obesity. These facts can be required from the NHS website. We shall be also producing a questionnaire to members of the Sixth Form to hear their views.

How will the 5 minute fit into the larger whole?

Our documentary will fit because of the increasing rate of obesity. Advertisements such as Change 4 Life have now been shown on TV on a regular basis, so there is obviously a call for concern of health in the UK.

Who is your target audience?

Our target audience ranges from 15 to 21 year old males and females. This is because we fell that these ages are most likely to be subjects of obesity.

Why would C4 or another channel want to commission this documentary?

The reason C4 or any other channel commission this, is due to the subject that we are researching. This may been seen as a very controversial subject and do to Channel 4's documentaries mainly being controversial, we feel this would be suitable for them to commission. As stated earlier, channels' have been advertising for the UK to get healthy so our documentary would look into what certain individuals do to not become obese.
Is there a global market for your documentary?

There defiantly a global market for our documentary. It is not just effecting the UK but the entire world. Different countries and continents will also have the some sort of the condition effecting them. Another reason why there is a global market for our documentary s due to the globalization of fast-food. Fast-food is widely accessible in many continents such McDonald's, so this would effect the everyone and other parts of the world may take interest in the documentary.
